Mae Hong Son Holiday – Day 4: Pai – Chiang Dao – Chiang Mai

When you come down for breakfast on Day 4, you will see monks walking barefoot in the streets of Pai and receiving food offerings from the local residents. Monks are revered in Thailand, and there is something about the way people pay respect to them and receive their blessings that touches your heart.

You will need to leave early in the morning, especially if you have an elephant show to catch. The drive will be a pleasant one, and you will take several scenic stops to enjoy the Thai natural beauty. The road is curvy and the climbs are steep. In fact, this part of Thailand is known for its curves: over 1,000 and you count them! You want look straight ahead to enjoy the ride and avoid motion sickness.

This drive is also an opportunity to reflect on the last three days of your holiday. You will realise that you have made friends with your excellent guide and driver. Your guide has taken good care of you, being there when you required their service, and giving you the personal space when you needed to be on your own. The driver has opened and closed the door for you and kept the vehicle very clean, in addition to driving safely and carefully. You have enjoyed the scenery. You have relished the food – never mind how spicy it was! You have loved the local people, their warmth and their hospitality. You have admired how clean everything is, especially public places and toilets. The Thai people have a style that has made you smile: they are creative and their presentation is very good – the way they decorate shops and restaurants, the way they package souvenirs, the way they serve food, the way they cut fruit and vegetable, so on and so forth. The entire Thailand feels like a piece of art in paradise. No one can beat the friendliness and hospitality of the Thai people. In four days, you have gained so much more than your money would have ever bought, gathering memories that will be enough to last a lifetime.

You will drive via Chiang Dao, where there is an Elephant Training Centre. This would be a good place to stop to enjoy an elephant performance or an elephant ride, depending on what you want to do. Here, you could also go on a bamboo raft and buy various products, including food, painting and souvenirs, to support the elephants. If it is lunchtime and you are hungry, there is a good restaurant by the river.

From the Chiang Dao Elephant Centre, it’s an hour’s drive to Chiang Mai city. You would be back reasonably early, with the second half of your day available for you to spend on Chiang Mai tourist attractions, if you are not too tired, that is.

Cultural and historical interest

It is best to travel to Bangkok , Ayutthaya , Khanchanaburi  and Floating market to see the differences in culture, architecture and way of life.

Bangkok

Bangkok has been Thailand's dominant city since the eighteenth century. Established as the capital in 1767 after the fall of the ancient city of Ayutthaya, Bangkok is located on one of southeast tern Asia's most important rivers, the Chao Phraya. In the 1980s and 1990s, Bangkok underwent rapid modernization, growing to approximately ten million people, making this the only major city in a country of villages and small towns. Bangkok's ancient palaces and Buddhist temples contrast with high rises and traffic jams.
