29 June 2013 – Bangkok China Town Walking Tour

Morning time in China town

This morning, I left my house early morning for observe new routing of China town. I have visited China town in Bangkok for uncountable time. My previous visit was in the middle of the day.

This is my first time to arrive China town or Yaoward at 07.00 of Saturday.  There was a few shop open during the day. Most of them are street food restaurant and vendor.
In front of noodle shop

Special Noodle

My first stop was Ran Kouy Jub Nai Eak. Kouy jub is a big flat rice noodle in a square shape . Sen Kouy jub will be steam in hot water and flat shape noodle will be transform into roll shape. This is a Chinese food heritage which I was not sure where it was originated from.
Kuay Jub

The Kouy Jub soup condenses with pepper make it spicy without adding chilly. The best Kouy Jub will top with crispy pork (Moo Sam Chan) or streaky pork. This pork needs to soak with salt for a day or less. Then deep fly. It similar to bacon but less dry , more juicy with oil and less salty taste than bacon. Over all, I think this shop is nice. I had a good meal to energize my long day.
Durian , King of fruit

Vietnamese Temple

Then I went to the meeting place. It called Wat Yuan for short name or Wat Kuson samakorn. Yuan refer to Vietnamese. They migrated to Thailand since 1700s. China town in Bangkok has more Yuan (Vietnamese temple) more than Chinese temple. Upon arrival, it was nice to listen to morning chance in the morning. Later we have a great opportunity to talk to the abbot and his secretary. It was an eye opening about this Buddhist sec. They explained about the history, mind set and future. Thinking of Buddhist temple as regular cooperate. Recruitment, strategy, mission and vision are key element to keep moving. Having problem with issue above is a big challenge. I wish the best and have more energy to deal with that.

Chinese Temple

Then, we move to temple called Wat Bampen Jean Pot. This area use to be abandon shine and were used as temporary shuttle of Buddhist monk in Wat Yuan (Vietnamese ) before. There are many Chinese deity , Buddha statue , and the architecture reflex to influent from Southern of China. We arrive at chanting time as well. It is so vibrant and interesting. We walk to the top floor which is 6th level to learn about history of this place. The sorry of the first abbot was interesting. He came from China and earn the Thai-Chinese respect

Thai Temples

Next , we visit Wat Kanmatuyaram. This is a small temple near Mangkorn ally.  This is Thai temple or Thewawat sec. The famous bawd in China town donate her land to make temple. This temple has Chedi (half bell shape building) which similar to Tham Meka stup in India. Tham meka stup is a place where the Buddha first educate his follow.

Simple but Yummy Lunch

Buay and I continue for lunch at Yoawarat Photchana. They small shop with all delicious menu. We order Koaw pad poo. Fired rice with crab meat is the name in English. It is delicious as always. Buay came here the first time and she impress with the yummy taste.

We walked to the next temple. On the way, we met P Nut team. They went inside Rong J, place that offer vegetarian food. We went inside before walk through the next temple.

Royal Temple

The temple call Wat Jakkawat rachawat. The old temple built during Ayutthaya period. Later , the royal family member and the nobility of Bangkok people were renovated. This place used to house Pra Bang, the Buddha statue from Luang Prabang. Later , Thai King transfer the Buddha statue back to Laos. The Vihan or main building of this temple has a very nice mural painting which create during the reign of King Ram III.
The next temple is Wat Bor pitpimok  , a place where Bangkok people use for cremation. We see the new design of mural paining of the main building which combine the Arab style. The coronial wood  house and Chinese design are be able to see here.

Post Office Museum

Next is a long to the first post office of Bangkok. The original building were destroy last 25 year ago. We see the new building which is in the same design and saw old pictures. We enjoyed the story of PraPrecha Konlaka which was one own this land and understand about his story.

Overall, the trip went well. The weather was not so hot. We can walk and sit well in each place. There are new corner of Chinatown for my first visit. This is very useful for my company and my other tour guide friend.
